Ely Theological College was a school in Ely, Cambridgeshire, for training clergy in the Church of England. Founded in 1876 〔(Dowland, David A. ''A Dictionary of English Church History'', Milwaukee: Morehouse Publishing Company, 2nd ed., 1919, p. 590, col. 1. )〕 the college had a strong Anglo-Catholic tradition.〔(Symondson, Anthony. ''Loose Canon: A Portrait of Brian Brindley'', Continuum International Publishing Group, 2004, p. 82. ) ISBN 0-8264-7418-7 Ely's "ritualistic" (i.e. "Catholic") tendencies were attacked in a House of Commons debate in 1899.
